In recent years, work on Sunbeam has focused on sails, rigging, interior and preparations for her new role as a sail training vessel. Now it is time to turn our attention below the waterline to the hull.

During the winter of 2024–2025, Sunbeam was in dry dock at Beckholmen for a thorough hull inspection and her mandatory five-year survey, laying the foundation for the next major preservation phase. On 15 December 2025 we began the crucial restoration of the stern, planned to run over four winter seasons in dry dock.

Thanks to support from the Swedish National Heritage Board, the Swedish Maritime Museums, a legacy from one of UMMAB’s founders, and income from Classic Sailing, the first stage can start. However, high-quality oak is very expensive, and many hours of a skilled shipwright are required, even with volunteers and apprentices involved. With current funds we can only buy about half of the necessary timber, and if the sternpost also needs replacing, costs will rise further.

To avoid jeopardising the 2026 sailing season, we need to secure additional funding of about 200,000 SEK (approx. 18,500 EUR / 16,500 GBP).

Sunbeam’s Friends is therefore launching a fundraising campaign to support the hull renovation. Every gift helps:

  • 500–600 SEK (45–55 EUR / 40–50 GBP) – one hour of a master shipwright’s work

  • 1,000 SEK (≈ 90 EUR / 80 GBP) – timber for one frame

  • 10,000 SEK (≈ 925 EUR / 815 GBP) – one long oak plank for the hull

  • 50,000 SEK (≈ 4,625 EUR / 4,075 GBP) – oak for a new sternpost

Will you help keep Sunbeam sailing as a living piece of maritime heritage for future generations?
