Hull restoration of Sunbeam – preserving living heritage
Over recent years, Sunbeam has received new sails, rigging, and interior upgrades, preparing her for her next role as a school ship. Now, focus turns below the waterline – to the hull that carries it all.
Winter at Beckholmen
During winter 2024–2025, Sunbeam lay in dry dock at Beckholmen for a full hull inspection and five‑year survey. The work went as planned and set the stage for the current phase: a major stern renovation, begun in December 2025 and expected to continue over four winters.
Craft, volunteers, and tradition
Built in 1905 in Lowestoft, Sunbeam is one of few classic sailing vessels in active use in the Nordics. Professional shipwrights are now replacing frames and boards, while volunteers prepare for spring maintenance, sealing and checking the hull. By mid‑March, an intense period of caulking, rig work, and interior rebuilding will begin.
Funding and support
Thanks to support from the Swedish National Heritage Board, the National Maritime Museums, a legacy donation, and expected income from Classic Sailing, the project is underway. Yet fine oak timber and skilled craftsmanship come at a cost. Current funds cover only part of the expenses, and to keep the 2026 sailing season on track, about 200,000 SEK more must be raised.
Join the effort
Every contribution counts:
-
500–600 SEK = one hour of shipwright’s work
-
1,000 SEK = timber for one frame
-
10,000 SEK = one oak plank
-
50,000 SEK = material for a new sternpost
Supporting Sunbeam means keeping a 120‑year‑old vessel – and the skills behind her – alive for the next generation. Our long‑term dream: to sail back to Lowestoft by 2030.
